Emotional Regulation & Brain Breaks
A brain break is an opportunity for children to regain a sense of calm and regulate strong feelings. When a child is upset, it can be difficult to effectively problem solve. Allowing children to take a brain break before having a problem solving conversation, helps their brain be in a learning state and ready to repair the problem. Taking a brain break can be a productive alternative to a traditional timeout. The video and materials below can be helpful for creating a brain break space in your home.

Discipline & Problem Solving
Productive problem solving allow adults to support children in working through a problem. When we think of the word discipline as “teaching” then we can view behavioral challenges as opportunities to help teach our children skills like being persistent, being responsible, regulating emotions, and more. We can also help them navigate how to repair a situation when they make social mistakes (like pushing, not following directions, not listening, etc) and have accountability for their actions. It’s also important to strengthen our relationship with children using the 3 Cs (connect, calm, and collaborate) and teach positive self-talk.
The Problem Solving Reflection is a guide to help children process problems, learn from mistakes, and repair relationships. You can print the document double sided, put it in a page protector, and use a dry-erase marker to reuse the form. Making multiple copies allows each child to have their own reflection form so they can all share their side of the story. You can also print multiple copies and use a new form for different problems. Likewise, you can reference the digital version when having a problem-solving conversation.
